Speculation is mounting that next month's Spring Budget may be postponed, following Sajid Javid's resignation as chancellor.
Spring Budget 2020 is set to take place after Prime Minister's Questions on the afternoon of 11 March.
But the fiscal event was thrown into doubt after Javid quit and the Spring Budget date will be a matter for the new chancellor, Rishi Sunak.
Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show on Sunday 16 February 2020, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps stoked the fires.
When asked if the Spring Budget will still take place on 11 March, Shapps said: "It's a matter for the new chancellor, Rishi.
"I don't think we've definitely said it will go ahead on the same date as mentioned before in March.
"Clearly we will need to have a Budget, but the guy's only been in place for a few days. Let's give him a few days to decide on the date."
Javid said he "had no option but to resign" after being instructed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to fire all of his special advisers to the Treasury.
The 50-year-old had been due to deliver his first Budget last November, before it was cancelled to make way for a general election.
Sunak is expected to review his predecessor's plans this week before deciding whether or not to postpone the Spring Budget.
