Riding with purpose – Tour de Four

Jul 28, 2025 | Charities

Jonathan Staples has been a part of the Horsfield & Smith family for a long time. Starting in 1994, he spent over 30 years in the role of Director. In November 2023, we were saddened to hear that Jonathan had been diagnosed with two brain tumours as a result of Stage 4 Melanoma.

Yet, despite this life-altering news, Jonathan has chosen not only to face his own battle head-on but to also support others confronting similar challenges.

Being such a close and personal cause for Jonathan, you can understand why he has signed up for the Tour de Four, a charity cycling event started by Olympian Sir Chris Hoy after he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer himself.

He will be heading over to Glasgow on September 7th to take part in the bike ride, and is raising money in the weeks leading up to it.

Why this ride matters?

Sir Chris Hoy’s Tour de Four is not just a race; it’s a chance to raise vital funds and awareness for organisations providing essential services, research, and support to cancer patients and their families. Fundraising for the event will support five of the UK’s biggest cancer charities.

  • Breast Cancer Now
  • Cancer Research UK
  • Macmillan
  • Maggie’s
  • Prostate Cancer UK

Each of these organisations plays a crucial role in improving lives, advancing treatment, and offering hope to those affected by cancer. Whether this comes in the form of emotional support, medical help, vital research, or social support, these charities ensure that no one is alone during their cancer journey.

How can you send your support?

Jonathan’s courage and commitment are inspiring reminders of the power of community and compassion. Supporting his ride means directly contributing to the fight against cancer and helping those who need it most.

Jonathan has set up a Go Fund Me page so people can sponsor his bike ride and make donations to charity. Jonathan would be incredibly grateful for any and all donations and gestures. No matter how little or large, every contribution makes a difference. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing the fundraiser so he can reach more people.

We’re wishing Jonathan the best of luck in his preparation, fundraising, and participation on the big day. Together, we can pedal towards hope, healing and change.
